Food Virality in Malaysia

A growing collection of ORBIT research on what becomes viral, why it spreads, and which signals appear before mass attention.

Working definition

Virality is not a view count.

A food phenomenon becomes meaningfully viral when attention or adoption accelerates beyond its originating audience, reproduces through additional people or networks, and starts producing observable behaviour beyond the original source. Different foods can ignite for different reasons, but genuine breakouts increasingly show independent repetition, network escape, active search and real participation.

Questions still open

We do not create thin pages for every keyword. These become standalone research only when the evidence is strong enough.

What does “viral food” actually mean?

Post, product, venue, category and eating behaviour are different viral objects.

What do viral foods have in common?

Test payoff, compatibility, proposition clarity, demonstration, reproduction and network escape.

Are Malaysia’s viral foods usually foreign?

Separate imported categories from local venue virality, Malaysian remixes and reverse-flow cases.

How long does viral food stay viral?

Separate attention life from category life and avoid a fake universal average.

Can one influencer make food viral?

Distinguish giant broadcast reach from self-propagating diffusion.

Why do viral posts create no real demand?

Find near-winners and high-view failures to test the model rather than confirm it.

What happens before everyone notices?

Reconstruct acceleration, search, independent creators and network escape before mainstream coverage.

How do food trends move between countries?

Measure origin, adoption lag, renaming, local mutation and whether late markets get shorter cycles.

What moves a finding up in confidence

High confidence

Multiple independent evidence types agree, such as experiments, large observational datasets and compatible Malaysian cases.

Promising

The mechanism is plausible and supported, but direct Malaysian causal evidence is still incomplete.

Still open

Interesting patterns that public evidence cannot yet establish, such as a universal viral lifespan or fixed numeric threshold.

Research log

Reframed the project from a four-part finished series into an ongoing research programme. Separated reach from reproduction and began treating the flagship page as a living synthesis.

Expanded beyond the initial eight Malaysian trails using diffusion, food psychology, influencer, network and international trend evidence. Identified the need for Malaysian winner vs near-winner data before claiming predictive probabilities.
